Ps No, I’m not the Todd who wrote this lovely
Crock Pots and One Smoking Barrel
Here’s a new Saskatoon purveyor of yummy eats. Shane Trottier smokes everything from elk tenderloin to aged cheddar to our duck breast pictured here. Shane’s pedigree includes Amigo’s and a decade stint as Chef at Calories Restaurant. Though you cannot order directly from Shane, feel free to talk to Kristen, Megan or I about getting something smoked by Shane. We will hook you up! Also look forward to these duck breasts when lunch returns to Sushiro June.
Planet S Best of Dining in Saskatoon, Readers Poll
We are very happy to receive a Best Sushi acknowledgement in the Planet S Magazine’s annual readers poll. Also our front of house man, Aman was a finalist for best server. I’m super proud of Aman, who has really exerted himself, learning and polishing his skills all the while managing the various personalities at Sushiro. I also think it says a lot that Aman earned this recognition in our little establishment when there so are many big restaurants that serve hundreds of people a night. Aman has earned us many loyal guests and himself recognition as a great server. Way to go!
Another favorite of mine who made a HUGE entrance into the readers poll this year is Dan Walker down at Weczeria Food and Wine. Dan took home the best chef honors in the categories first year. Dan most definitely has the most enthusiasm for the trade out of the chefs I know. He lives for all the romantic perks, shopping local at the farmer’s market, sourcing rare wine, and taking time to greet all his customers. Last time I had dinner there, Dan personally brought me out a pinch of fennel seeds to settle my hiccups. (Some times I eat like an animal.) Dan has plans to expand his business soon, a new location and expanded hours including a lunch service. I hope this means a return of Dan’s famous burger. Dan edged out Calories owner (and Dan’s ex-boss) Remi Cousyn.
A final shout out to Neil Malik at Scratch. I’m not sure everyone knows the work Neil had to put in BEFORE opening Saskatoon’s Best New Restaurant and Best Nightclub. I think about a year and a half of negotiations, planning, and renovations went into his operation. With all the work Neil put into that place before opening and since, I’m sure he will continue to succeed and build his restaurant.
